Hear and See
Workshop Nature - Improvisation - Solo
On 2 and 3 Oktober 2021 there will be a voice improvisation workshop on the island of Texel. The workshop will be guided primarily by Thomas Johannsen (Genetic Choir) from his practice as vocal improvisor. Anet van de Elzen will add to this from her practice as performance artist.
Surrounded by nature the experience of the body and the voice become very different from when being in the city. Time becomes a different experience. And there is silence, in thousands of ways. Wind and bird sounds are intriguingly present and at some moments it is really quiet. From the silence space and possibility arises. And look... here we find an image connected to the voice.
With these ingredients we offer an experience-oriented weekend that is about 'solo improvisation': improvisation as in not knowing or planning in advance, creating authentically on the spot.
This workshop is for participants who are more advanced in improvisation. For instance if you already have been following workshops or a course of Genetic Choir.
The solo element and listening to your surrounding and the Other, are facets that will be recurrently addressed. The immensity of nature and its’ rich palet of colours, the silence and the wind become our allies.
Thomas Johannsen researches with the Genetic Choir for 12 years now, how meaningful music arises from a completely open approach to the human voice and what music is (to you). His way of working is in demand internationally and is both challenging and accessible for every level that you bring along as a participant. www.genetic-choir.org
Anet van de Elzen creates images through sculpture, photography, film and performance. In making performances she often uses her voice and her body as a visual means. Improvisation is an important part of her work. She usually works solo and also performs internationally. www.anetvandeelzen.com
We will work on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. On Sunday we will work from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, to experience the sunrise on the island.
About half of the workshop will take place outside, the center of the work is the village hall on the Langwaal in De Waal, where we can work in the large theater hall. When we go into nature we will move around, this can be done by bicycle, car or Texelhopper. We will also walk. We can arrange this in consultation as the workshop approaches.
The costs of the workshop are € 190, including coffee and tea, lunch on Saturday and brunch on Sunday.
It is also possible to book an overnight stay including breakfast through Atelier De Waal.
A private room, including breakfast for 40 euros per night (3 rooms available), Friday and Saturday
A small caravan, including breakfast for € 30, - per night (1 available), Friday and Saturday
We can also help you find other accommodation on the island.
All RIVM measures due to covid-19 are taken into account during the workshop. This is possible because we work outside a lot and the theater room is large enough to keep 1.5 meters distance from each other.
