It is 'each other's other – a plea for naive curiosity'
story of two former neighbor girls from very different families, Margriet
Kemper and Froukje Reitsema. They discover each other's world, which gives them no fear
inspires but also makes you curious. World history makes that happen
in the late 1950s an Indian family and a Frisian-Groningen family came next to each other
to live.
“Every life, no matter how unremarkable, reflects the light of history,”
writes David van Reybrouck in 'Revolusi', and that is included in the performance
clearly based on the story of the two families.
two fragments from the performance:
Margriet:
Where do I start my story? Isn't there always a beginning before another beginning? When it comes to my parents' decision to leave the country of their birth, their motherland, the Indies, and to move to their homeland, the Netherlands, the beginning may lie in 1955. But far, far before that lies the real beginning, when The Netherlands considers the wealth of spices that grow on a number of islands as its own. “The Colonies exist for the Mother Country, and not the Mother Country for the Colonies,” was established two hundred years ago. Later, the entire archipelago will be annexed and the Netherlands will rule there with an iron fist.
Froukje:
While Margriet is forced to travel across half the globe with her father, mother and brothers, nothing happens to us. Nothing at all, life passes us by calmly and quite easily. Of course, the Second World War has not yet been over, but that doesn't bother me. But on November 4, 1956, when Margriet, still unknown to me, has just arrived in our country, a piece of great history is shot into my mind like an arrow. My parents are glued to the radio to hear what is happening in Hungary. Warsaw Pact military forces have invaded the disobedient country. Troops? Soldiers from Russia? I don't really understand how bad it actually is, but I feel very clearly that it is bad.
